Two county car chase ends in Edgefield County

web posted June 23, 2009
MERRIWETHER – A Monday afternoon car chase that crossed county lines ended in Merriwether after the suspect turned off Woodlawn Road onto a dirt road, drove through private property, and then jumped from the Chevrolet van and tried to flee on foot. A McCormick County Sheriff’s Deputy called in the chase after a failed traffic stop for speeding on Highway 28 and continued into Edgefield County. Not long afterwards Donnie Lewis, 50, of an unknown Georgia address, was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges.

The first report to Edgefield County Sheriff’s Dispatchers around 3:45 pm indicated Mr. Lewis had possibly thrown narcotics out of the window of the blue van during the chase and continued to flee towards Augusta on Highway 28. At one point in the chase Lewis turned left onto Fire Tower Road, which turns into Woodlawn Road upon entering Edgefield County, and Edgefield Sheriff’s Deputies began converging on the area.

Lewis then turned onto Reddy Branch Road, a narrow and hilly gravel road, and drove to the end of the road and into private property. From there he took private roads until he slammed on the brakes and jumped from the van and headed into the woods with a McCormick County Deputy in foot pursuit for about 25 yards before being apprehended.

Edgefield Sheriff’s Deputies arrived minutes later and assisted in the search of the van for any additional evidence. Mr. Lewis was found to have an open bottle of liquor in the van at the time of his arrest, but there were no indications that any drugs were found inside the van.

Lewis was transported to the McCormick County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of failure to stop for blue lights, speeding (80 in a 55 mph zone), and open container. According to jail officials, Mr. Lewis has two additional charges pending service of warrants. The nature of the charges was unavailable.

Edgefield Sheriff’s Deputies took custody of the van and had it towed from the scene. In a bit of irony, a sticker on the back window of the van stated in part, “Restore Law and Order”.
