Merriwether man recovering from Sunday collision, family questions initial report

web posted June 24, 2009
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether man injured in a near head-on collision Sunday is still recovering from his injuries at the MCG Medical Center in Augusta and has been released from the Intensive Care Unit to a regular room on Tuesday. Thomas Tabb Sr., of Currytown Road, suffered a broken neck, several broken ribs, and a number of lacerations and bruises, Thomas Tabb Jr. said Tuesday evening. “They let him out of ICU today and right now everything looks good,” Mr. Tabb said. The family is also questioning how the collision took place.

After the initial report of the wreck was published on Monday, the family contacted EdgefieldDaily.com and stated they talked to the first person on the scene who stated the driver of the truck said a tire on his trailer blew out and he lost control of his truck, thus causing the crash.

Mr. Tabb Jr. said he would be meeting with the investigating Trooper today and has already provided the name and contact information of the witness to the earliest alleged statements by the driver of the Ford truck involved in the crash. Mr. Tabb said at least one other person on the scene also heard the statement.

“Right now Dad doesn’t remember much of anything,” Mr. Tabb Jr. said, “he doesn’t know if he hit another car, truck, or just crashed on his own.”

Armed with the possibility that the collision did not take place as reported, Mr. Tabb Jr. requested photographs of the crash site taken by EdgefieldDaily.com. As a courtesy, two copies were provided, one of which was to be given to the State Highway Patrol.

Mr. Tabb said he has visited the crash scene and reviewed the photographs and said scrapes in the pavement prior to the location believed to be the point of contact could support the possibility that the driver of the truck lost control with a flat or blown out tire on the trailer shortly before the crash. He believes his father was trying to avoid a collision with the truck, not the other way around.

“I don’t know what happened,” Mr. Tabb said, “but I do want them (Highway Patrol) to take everything into account and talk to the people who were there first and heard him (the other driver) say that the trailer got squirrelly and he lost control.”

How the investigation of the crash turns out ranked low on Mr. Tabb and the rest of the family’s list of priorities. “Our main concern is making sure that Dad is going to be alright,” Mr. Tabb Jr. said. “We’ll deal with the rest later.”

According to available information, the collision is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and no formal charges have been filed at this time.
