Couple returns to home of abandoned pets

web posted June 29, 2007
MERRIWETHER – The couple that is the base of an investigation of animal neglect returned to the home on the 100 block of Pin Oak Drive Thursday afternoon around 6:30. The home was searched with a search warrant on Tuesday and six or the seven animals were captured and taken to a holding facility after they were found to have been left without food or water inside the vacant home for several days.

The couple has agreed to meet with the investigating deputy Friday to discuss the case. Their identities have not been released for publication at this time.

Information was received on Thursday stating the ferret found in a cage in the home has died. Corporal Robbie Harter of the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office said he could not confirm the whether the ferret was alive or dead Thursday afternoon adding the animals were transported to the Aiken County Shelter Thursday morning.

According to Harter, the couple has not been charged in the case at this time.

Warrants for misdemeanor charges are being sought sources indicated and could be issued as soon as Friday. It was unknown if the charges would be for abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

Cpl. Harter said this was the first case in his memory of animals being abandoned inside a home rather than outside.

EdgefieldDaily.com will continue to follow this developing story and will have more coverage as the case proceeds.
