 Deputy injured in fiery crash while responding to call web posted July 1, 2009  MERRIWETHER – An
Edgefield County
Sheriff’s Deputy responding to a call of a wreck on Republican Road
lost control of his patrol car, hit an embankment, and reportedly was
ejected from the car as it burst into flames. An ambulance responding
to the first wreck happened upon the deputy lying on the side of the
road and began treating him for his injuries.Merriwether Firefighters also responded from the first wreck to extinguish the burning patrol car as First Responders and EMS workers carefully immobilized the deputy and then loaded him into the ambulance to be rushed to the MCG Trauma Unit. His injuries were not considered to be life threatening.  A deputy on the
scene disputed the report that the injured deputy was
ejected from the car as the only items found outside the car were
important papers, his wallet, ticket book, and other duty related
material suggesting the deputy retrieved the items from the burning car
before collapsing.The woman in the first wreck was also transported by ambulance to MCG with minor injuries (below). The Tiburon she was driving left the roadway after overcorrecting in a curve. The car never struck anything that firefighters could see. Both crashes occurred just before 4 pm Wednesday afternoon.  © Copyright 2009
