"Habitual Offender" Facing Multiple Charges

web posted July 1, 2014

MERRIWETHER A North Augusta man is in jail facing multiple charges including being a "habitual offender" after an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy spotted a white Chevrolet Cavalier speeding on Martintown Road early Monday morning. Before the deputy could make a traffic stop, the driver made a "quick right turn" onto Woodlawn Road and then stopped in the middle of the road shortly after 2 am.

The deputy then made a traffic stop and identified the driver as 34-year-old Damien Raymond Wood (left), of Park Avenue in North Augusta. When asked for his drivers license, registration and proof of insurance, Wood was unable to produce any of the requested documents.

It was found that Wood's South Carolina drivers license was suspended for driving under suspension for DUI and was taken into custody. The tag displayed on the car came back to an Infinity registered in Georgia. A check of the VIN on the car found it registered to a North Augusta address with a SC tag that did not expire until March of 2016.

Wood was charged with being a habitual offender, driving under suspension for DUI 3rd offense, improper vehicle license, reckless driving and no proof of insurance and transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking.

The car was towed from the scene and a femal passenger in the car at the time was allowed to call someone to pick her up. She was not charged in the case.

Wood remains behind bars on a total of $4,860 in bonds after a bond hearing Monday. He has a court date of August 13 at 10 am.
