Sheriff’s Office launches search for missing woman
web
posted July 6, 2009
MERRIWETHER – A late
night 911 call
started an exhaustive search for a missing woman Saturday night at the
Forks Area Trail System on Woodlawn Road. Emergency Dispatchers
received the call at 11:18 pm with a man, his wife, and another couple
reporting finding a silver Nissan parked with no one around and then
heard frightening screams of a woman coming from the woods. The man
making the 911 call said the screams were those of a woman in fear.
Deputies converged on the area trying to locate the car and shortly
thereafter were alerted that a First Responder located the car parked
in a far corner of the parking area at the trail system.
Deputies began calling out for anyone in the area while running the
license plate on the car, which came back to a North Augusta couple.
Dispatchers attempted to contact the owner regarding information on the
car and were alerted by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office that they had
a deputy at the home taking a missing person report of a 66-year-old
woman who was in poor health.
According to the woman’s husband, he left he home early in the morning
and returned early afternoon to find a note from his wife saying she
was going “looking for arrowheads and stones” at the trails, which she
has done before.
The Edgefield County Bloodhound Team, Sheriff Adell Dobey, and an
Investigator arrived on the scene a short time later. The woman’s
husband also had someone bring him to the location as he awaited word
of his wife. Sheriff Dobey and the investigator spoke with the husband
to gain more information as the search started to get underway.
Also contacted to aid in the search were the Department of Natural
Resources (DNR), the US Forestry Service, and a helicopter from the
State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). An Edgefield County EMS unit was
also called to stand by at the scene. A State Trooper assisted by
patrolling nearby roads in case the woman were to exit the woods and
try to seek help.
The Bloodhound Team took their lead dog to the car and opened the door
so the bloodhound could begin tracking. In no time the hound was on a
scent and at times was “pulling” the team members behind. Eventually
the
trail went cold and the team turned back to the staging area to try to
begin another search and give the hound some water.
Sheriff Dobey then suggested that ATV’s be used to comb the surrounding
area and hoped the SLED helicopter, which is outfitted with an infrared
camera that can find the heat signatures of a person beneath the trees
from above, would arrive soon.
The hours were quickly passing by, it was now just after 3 am and
deputies were still unable to locate the woman. The woman’s husband
took time to try to get some rest by sleeping in the couple’s car as
the search continued.
The woman had been missing for at least 15 hours. Her last known
location was the North Augusta Wal-Mart where she purchased ice for a
small cooler she always takes with her when she would visit the trails,
according to a receipt found inside the car. The report of the
terrifying screams by the two couples reporting the incident at 11 pm
had many fearing the worst.

While an ATV began
combing the trailheads, Sheriff Dobey and a few of
his men began a foot search of the immediate area while awaiting the
arrival of the helicopter. Around 4 am Sheriff Dobey signaled that he
had found the woman lying face down on a blanket in the woods and
called for the EMS unit to come to the area, located near an adjacent
gravel road. Though the woman did not appear to have been attacked, she
was obviously in need of medical attention.
EMT’s began assessing the woman, who could be roused only slightly, and
quickly loaded her into the ambulance and transported her to University
Hospital for further treatment.
The serious faces of all involved in the search quickly turned to
smiles with one member of the Bloodhound Team asking Sheriff Dobey,
“Where do you keep that lucky horseshoe of yours?” Sheriff Dobey just
smiled and said, “I don’t know.”
Afterwards Sheriff Dobey said as he and his men were searching the area
he was walking down the gravel road. “Call it luck, call it whatever
you want,” he said, “I just had a feeling she was close by.” It was
then he ventured off the road about 20 yards and found the woman.
Sheriff Dobey said, “Something just told me she was in there.” Blowing
off any individual recognition Sheriff Dobey simply said, “I’m glad we
found her.”
Sheriff Dobey and his team remained on the scene to critique the search
effort. The investigation was completed around 5 am.
The name of the woman is being withheld. Her condition was unavailable
Sunday afternoon.
