Sheriff's Office arrests Merriwether teen for setting fires

web posted July 7, 2007
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether teen has been arrest in connection to recent fires in the Merriwether community. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators said they began to question the repeated fires that were located in the Millcreeek Subdivision area and started to investigate the matter. By Friday afternoon they arrested the 15-year-old teen charged him for setting the fires.

The name of the teen has not been released due to his age, investigators said Friday after the arrest.

The Merriwether Fire Department has responded to repeated fires along the 100 block of Millcreek Drive, the last of which occurred on Thursday. The fire required the Forestry Service to respond to plow a fire break.

It was during the investigation they were able to identify a suspect and brought him in for questioning early Friday afternoon.

By 3 pm Investigators charged the teen as a juvenile and transported him to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. Investigators said they were familiar with the teen and have responded to several calls involving him in the recent past. The teen was charged with burning the property of another.

Just days away from his 16th birthday the teen could still be charged as an adult officials said. That determination will be made by the Solicitor’s Office. No court date was provided.
