Fallen tree causes two crashes Tuesday night
web
posted July 9, 2008
MERRIWETHER –
Shortly after 10 pm Tuesday
a call to E911 Dispatchers reported a tree had fallen across Martintown
Road about three miles north Briggs Road. Within minutes another report
came in that the tree had been struck by a passing driver and the truck
was in the ditch. While deputies were being dispatched another report
of a wreck came in saying a second vehicle had also struck the tree.
Deputies arrived on the scene within minutes and with the help of a
passing motorist with a saw they were able to clear the roadway. The
two trucks suffered substantial damage, but fortunately no one was
injured.
The driver of the first truck, a Chevrolet 1500, said he rounded the
curve westbound after crossing the bridge near Frank’s Grocery, and
slammed into the tree. “I never saw it”, he said. The trunk of the tree
and branches caused major damage to the front of his truck including
his bumper, front end, hood, and busted the windshield. He said he
pulled to the side of the road, with some portions of the tree in tow,
when the second truck slammed into the remaining section of the tree.
The second westbound
driver in a Chevrolet Silverado faired a little
better but gave a similar account. He said that as he came upon the
area a passing car approached and he dimmed his lights and never saw
the tree. His truck suffered moderate damage to the front end including
the bumper, headlights, hood, and grill area. His truck was still
drivable after the crash.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol took over the investigation of the
two crashes, believed to be no fault towards the drivers, but no
official determination was provided on the scene.
The live 50-60 foot tree appeared to have had a weak spot near the base
of the trunk and even though there were no winds, the tree snapped and
fell.
