Search for missing Merriwether man continues

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  15, 2005

MERRIWETHER - A massive search for Marion Key, 74, who has been missing since late Tuesday night, got underway Thursday afternoon. Volunteers from the Merriwether Fire Department, Big Stevens Creek Baptist Church, the Merriwether Community and staff of Edgefield Daily.com joined in with Edgefield County Deputies and South Carolina Highway Patrol Officers trying to locate Mr. Key.

Mr. Key was last seen leaving his job at Wal-mart in North Augusta around about 11:00 pm Tuesday night driving a 1993 red Geo Metro with a tow bar on the front of the car. The South Carolina license plate is a handicap tag with the numbers 49579.

The search covered all of Merriwether and portions of Aiken County. Volunteers began by retracing his last known route and by checking ravines and heavily wooded areas on major routes. The search then expanded to connecting roads and culminated with a driveway by driveway search of the area to no avail.

Mr. Key is in need of several medications for heart and other health related problems and was due to receive a dialysis treatment Wednesday morning. Melba Key, Mr. Key’s wife, and her family are based at the family home and holding on to the hope they will find him soon. The family has requested people keep the family in their prayers. Members of the Big Stevens Creek Baptist Church have started a prayer chain as well.

Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey activated the newly installed A Child is Missing call center which makes 1000 calls per minute to alert people in the area of the missing person. “I am going to contact North Augusta and Aiken County to see if they will activate theirs as well,” Sheriff Dobey said, which some Merriwether residents said they received calls from both counties. “We have placed him on the NCIC list as well,” Sheriff Dobey said. NCIC is a national watch list for all law enforcement agencies in the nation to be on the lookout for sought individuals.

With darkness and storms moving in the search was called off for the night and will resume today. Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department at 803-637-5337 or 803-278-1625.

Due to our involvement in the search there will be no full update on Saturday, July 16, 2005. We thank our readers for understanding.
