Fire consumes Merriwether home Monday night

web posted July 17, 2007
MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether Fire Department was called to the scene of a house fire just after 8:30 Monday evening and arrived to find the backside of a two-story home on Phoenix Court, in Currytown Station, fully engulfed in flames. Just before firefighters arrived a car in the garage of the home exploded and sent a plume of fire reaching the tops of trees some sixty feet above the home. The family was at home at the time the fire was discovered and was able to escape injury along with their 7-week-old newborn child.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time as firefighters continue to battle the blaze at press time. The County Line and Belvedere Fire Departments also responded to provide mutual aid and extra manpower.

The fire entered the main part of the home before spreading upstairs and into the attic. Firefighters were able to enter the home and prevent the fire from spreading further into the home though the home suffered heavy smoke and water damage as firefighters battled the blaze.
