Shooting reported in Merriwether

web posted July 18, 2006

MERRIWETHER - Just before 4:30 pm Monday 911 dispatchers sent Sheriff’s Deputies to check on a 911 hang up call they received from a home on the 900 block of Murrah Forrest Drive. A few minutes later Merriwether First Responders were called to the same address for a leg wound. The call escalated when it was determined that a man at the house had been shot.

Once deputies cleared the scene First Responders began treating the man for the gunshot wound to his upper right thigh and police began roping off the crime scene as they began their investigation. The man’s wife sat in the yard crying. She said that she did not know what happened other than she heard a gunshot and came into the front room to find her husband saying he was “okay” until she saw the blood.

The man was stabilized and transported to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta, his condition has not been released. It is unknown at this time if the shooting was accidental due to the ongoing investigation.

Sheriff’s Investigator Phil Ireland said the case is still under investigation and could not comment on specifics. The 9 mm pistol was taken into evidence. An update will be made available as more information is released in the case.
