Family of missing Merriwether man faces many obstacles

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  21, 2005

Melba Key, wife of Marion Key, 74, who has been missing since leaving his job as a Wal-Mart greeter Tuesday July 12 due to illness, has had to face additional problems during the search relating to his disappearance.

“We had a plumbing problem that flooded the bathroom the other night and as soon as we got it fixed a water line broke and flooded it again,” Mrs. Key said. To top it off she said their refrigerator has quit working, something she attributed to the constant power interruptions in electric service in the area and the family has to resort to keeping food brought for the family in ice chests.

Mrs. Key said the family has printed up another 1000 flyers and has been as far as Lexington to place them. “We are holding on to hope he will be found,” Mrs. Key said. The family is doing its best to keep spirits high although there are times, “we just have to let it go,” she said.

The family stated they are paying the cost of all printing and the gas to distribute the flyers and thanked the community for their help. “Everyone has been so helpful” she said and added the Edgefield County Sheriffs Department and Sheriff Adell Dobey has kept the family well informed of the progress of the search. "Sheriff Dobey makes it a point to come to talk to us and let us know what is going on," Mrs. Key said. "Someone from the department is here everyday," she said.

No information on the red 1993 Geo Metro Mr. Key was last seen driving has been reported. No activity on the credit cards or gas cards he was carrying have been reported either. The car has a handicapped SC license plate with the number W49579 on it.

As Edgefield Daily.com has reported, Mr. Key's assorted medical ailments have made time a critical issue. Doctors have warned that Mr. Key is at risk of medical situations after seven days without medications. He has been missing for eight days today.

Those wishing to contribute funds to helping the family may contact Edgefield Daily.com at 803-643-0964 or 803-279-5041 for information on how to help. You may also e-mail us at editor@edgefielddaily.com.
