One arrested, two more sought in home invasion and assault

web posted July 21, 2006

MERRIWETHER – A report of three men entering the home of a Merriwether man and assaulting him last week has resulted in one being arrested and two others being sought. Wednesday, July 12, the Briggs Road man called the Sheriff’s Office to report the invasion and assault at his home just after 10:00 pm. The deputy arrived a short time later and the man began to give his account of what took place. The three men had already left the scene before the deputy arrived.

According to the 31-year-old man’s statement to police, he was at his home when the three men came to the door and then entered the home. One of the men stated he was looking for his estranged wife. During the episode, the homeowner stated at least one of the three men assaulted him.

The man said when the three men left they also stole his young son’s dog.

Just a few minutes prior to the incident neighbors told the deputy that they heard five gunshots and then saw a white truck drive by their house.

The case was turned over to investigators. Further information gathered found inconsistencies in the story told by the subjects. The neighbors also gave further information. The result of the investigation gave the Sheriff’s Office enough evidence to arrest Jeremiah Rupert, 28, of Azalea Drive, Augusta, for entering a home without permission and assault. Warrants were also issued for David Hartley and John Lackes, also of Augusta, on the same charges.

Mr. Hartley and Mr. Lackes have not been taken into to custody at this time.

The dog was later returned to the owner.
