Storm blocks traffic, knocks out power in Merriwether area
web
posted July 22, 2008
MERRIWETHER –
Merriwether Firefighters,
Edgefield Sheriff’s Deputies, South Carolina department of
Transportation, and Aiken Electric Cooperative workers were all
summoned to the Springhaven Drive and Martintown Road area after a
short but powerful storm moved through the area downing trees and power
lines and closed all traffic on Martintown Road for well over an hour
Monday afternoon.
The storm moved through the area around 3 pm with lightning and high
winds that left many in the area without power for hours on a day when
temperatures topped 100 degrees. Though the rain cooled the
temperatures for a short time the destruction left in its wake had
Merriwether Firefighters cutting the downed trees in an effort to open
the roadways.
Traffic on Martintown Road was diverted from the east towards Murrah
Road and from the west end down Springhaven Drive once trees were
cleared from the road. Martintown Road, however, saw several large
trees down knocking out power lines, leaving one hanging dangerously
low in from of a home on the 1600 block and a large tree blocking the
roadway.
Marilyn Gerrity, a spokesperson for Aiken Electric Cooperative, issued
a press release stating that roughly 500 customers were without power
after a series of storms moved through the Merriwether and Aiken areas.
Crews were aggressively seeking to restore service to those locations.
Martintown Road traffic was restored shortly after 6 pm, though power
crews were still working to repair widespread disruption of power lines
due to the number of trees down.
Edgefield County Emergency Management Director Mike Casey arrived to
survey the damage and said the destruction in the Merriwether area was
most likely due to a “micro-burst” due to all of the trees falling in
the same direction, unlike the damage caused by a tornado.
