Boaters discover sunken truck web posted July 23, 2007 Mr. Wikander said they were able to move it a few feet when the chain broke loose and they decided to contact WJBF Channel 6 News in Augusta. When a reporter arrived the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office was notified. When deputies arrived there was obvious oil spreading across the waterway but it was still unknown what was under the water. Once the dive team and wrecker were both on the scene divers attached a cable to the truck and it was pulled from the waterway. The blue Dodge Ram work truck had the steering column broken away and wires were hanging below indicating the truck may have been stolen. Deputies were unable to identify an owner by a license plate on the truck or by the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The case has been turned over the Investigative Division of the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office. Sergeant Ron Talbert with Department of Natural Resources said the amount of oil and gas that leaked from the truck would not pose any threat to the waterway or the wildlife. “It looks like a lot when it’s on top of the water,” Talbert said, but added that there was very little that actually escaped from engine or the gas tank of the truck.
