A Miracle in Merriwether Edgefielddaily.com web posted July 28, 2005 MERRIWETHER – Just after dawn the intersection of Martintown Road at Woodlawn and Briggs Roads witnessed a miracle. Gary Richard, of Briggs Rd, said he entered the intersection from Briggs Rd and never saw the truck coming, “that man is a hero,” he said pointing to the overturned truck and referring to its driver. “He did everything he could to keep from killing me,” Mr. Richard said. “It was a miracle no one was killed,” said a clerk at Sportsman’s Corner, which sits on the corner of the intersection. The accident, according to information that has been made available at this writing, says Mr. Richard was attempting to cross Martintown Road from Briggs Road just before 7:00 am Wednesday. As he entered the intersection an eastbound transfer trailer gravel truck operated by Ray Walker Trucking swerved right to avoid the collision and struck Mr. Richards Chevy Truck. The call to 9-1-1 came in at 7:05 am according to dispatchers. The pickup then was spun around and was struck again by a westbound truck also operated by Walker Trucking. Both drivers of the Walker Trucking Company were transported to the hospital for evaluation. Melinda W. Lindberg, a spokeswoman for Ray Walker Trucking said the drivers had been released by early afternoon but could not comment on their condition. Mr. Richard said he was speechless as to how he survived, “there is not one broken window in my truck,” he said. Indeed, the cab of his truck was virtually untouched. “I can’t explain it,” he said. Traffic was diverted up Briggs Road from the west and from the east of the accident at Currytown Road. Officers from the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the SC Department of Transportation Police worked gathering photos and statements as well as traffic control. Mr. Richard was found to be at fault in the accident Melinda W. Lindberg of Ray Walker Trucking said according to reports they had received from authorities.
