Man and woman flee crash scene on foot

web posted August 1, 2008
MERRIWETHER – Residents on Gregory Lake Road called 911 to report a crash near the lake around 10 pm Thursday night. When they went to investigate a man and a woman were seen fleeing from the crash scene on foot down a steep embankment. When Deputies arrived they had to direct traffic due to the crash being located between two sharp curves until additional units could arrive.

The owner of the 2001 Honda Accord was shown to be a Hephzibah man and a bankcard with his name on it was found inside the car. The owner was unable to be contacted. The keys were missing from the car and it was left with no lights on to warn unsuspecting drivers of the crash.

According to information from the scene, the driver and passenger were traveling on Gregory Lake Road towards Martintown Road when the driver failed to navigate a sharp curve and struck a pole and then the guardrails on both sides of the road before coming to a stop just across the dam.

Also found inside the car
(Left) were several opened bottles of liquor and beer and a cup that smelled of alcohol was found near the rear of the car.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Deputies searched the nearby woods for the two people but were unable to locate them.

The car was towed from the scene and the road reopened around 11:20 pm.
