Seatbelt saves Merriwether teen from injury in rollover crash

web posted August 5, 2008
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether teen escaped injury after he ran off the side of Sweetwater Road Monday, overcorrected, and rolled the truck into a fence. The rising Senior at Strom Thurmond said he ran off the road and when he tried to get back on the roadway the truck began to swerve and he lost control. Being restrained by a seatbelt saved the teen who suffered from only minor scrapes.

The crash took place just after 1 pm as the teen was traveling south on Sweetwater Road and left the truck upside down in front of a home located on the corner of Sweetwater and Republican Road. The truck rolled at least one and a half times.

Merriwether Firefighters, Edgefield County EMS, and Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the scene and found the young man shaken, but unhurt. Nearby residents stood by and comforted the teen while the Highway Patrol investigated the crash.

The truck suffered major damage in the crash and was said to be a total loss.
