Three times not a charm for accused thief
web
posted August 5, 2008
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether man called the
Sheriff’s Office to report building materials being stolen from his
property on the 2200 block of Gregory Lake Road Saturday morning around
9 am. A deputy and an investigator from the Sheriff’s Office arrived a
short time later and were informed that $5,000 worth of equipment and
materials were missing. By Monday morning that amount grew as the
suspected thief returned in the early morning hours and made off with
over $2,000 worth of additional items. The man then made a third trip
back to the location only to be interrupted during the theft by the
owner.
When the owner arrived around 7 am he found a Hispanic man, later
identified as 39-year-old Benjamin Bernard De Jesus, of Beach Island,
loading more items into a blue Chevy mini-van. The owner drew a handgun
and ordered the man to stop. According to information gathered, De
Jesus dropped what he was doing and fled the scene on foot. The owner
fired one shot into the ground next to himself in an attempt to scare
the man and prevent him from fleeing.
As Deputies were responding to the call one spotted a man matching the
suspect’s description running down Martintown Road and apprehended him.
De Jesus was returned to the scene and identified and then transported
to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking.
In all almost $10,000 in materials were stolen in the process and just
over $2,000 of that was recovered.
Mr. De Jesus has been charged with two counts of grand larceny and one
count of breaking into a motor vehicle. He is currently being held
without bond after a bond hearing Monday afternoon, jail records showed.
