Thursday night crash sends two to trauma unit web posted August 10, 2007 BELOW: Rescue workers treat the injured occupants MERRIWETHER – A one
car crash on Woodlawn
Road sent a man and woman to the MCG Trauma Unit after their Pontiac
Grand Am left the roadway and slammed backwards into the trees off the
opposite side of the road. The crash occurred just inside the Edgefield
County line just after 9 pm. The driver, a 21-year-old man, said three
deer ran out in front of them and he swerved to avoid hitting the deer
and lost control. The couple was traveling east on Woodlawn returning from a day at Clarks Hill lake and left the westbound lane and landed several yards in the woods with the rear of the car coming to rest some ten feet in the air. The driver and his 26-year-old passenger said they were able to climb out of the car and drop to the ground below. First Responders arrived on the scene and began evaluating the injuries as the Merriwether and McCormick Rescue squads were summoned to the crash site. Sheriff’s Deputies and EMS arrived a few minutes later. The crash blocked all traffic on Woodlawn Road for over an hour and slowed traffic until midnight as the car was removed from the woods. Alcohol and speed were considered to be a factor in the crash. The crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. For
