Second Sweetwater Road crash Wednesday sends one to MCG

web posted August 13, 2009
MERRIWETHER – A second crash Wednesday on Sweetwater Road snarled traffic, and for a short time blocked all traffic, leaving one man being rushed to MCG Hospital for treatment of multiple injures. According to information available on the scene, the man was driving a Honda Accord north on Sweetwater Road when he left the roadway exiting a downhill curve and rolled the car down a 12-foot embankment.

The man was able to crawl out of the car and up the embankment near the edge of the road where passing motorists stopped and began giving aid and notifying 911. Merriwether Firefighters and First Responders were the first to arrive on the scene and began assessing the injured man, who spoke very little English. Edgefield County EMS arrived a short time later and the man was immobilized and loaded into the ambulance for transport.

The crash, which occurred around 4:30 pm, was located at the bottom of the hill between Merriwether Fire Station 2 and the entrance to Shaw Estates. It was unknown why the man left the road and if he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Rescue workers were unable to find a drivers license for the Hispanic male in his wallet for identification purposes. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
