Missing Man Arrested After Being Located

web posted August 13, 2014

MERRIWETHER   A 31-year-old Merriwether man was reported missing on Monday morning by his father after the son failed to return home after going kayaking on Sunday afternoon on Stevens Creek. The father said the son left their Thurmond Road home and drove to a landing off Chota Drive around 3 pm Sunday. Deputies arrived at the home and later found the man's truck at the landing and called the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to aid in the search.

After nearly 4 hours of searching, DNR radioed Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies that they had located the man on the Savanna River and were transporting him back to the landing on Stevens Creek.

During the search, a deputy ran the tag that was on the truck belonging to the man's son, Benjamin Paul Beckler, and it came back as stolen. Deputies photographed the tag and then seized it as evidence. A check of the VIN number of the truck came back to Beckler.

As DNR officers began approaching the landing, Beckler saw the deputies on the banks of Stephens Creek and tried to escape by jumping from the boat and into the water. DNR officers were able to regain control of Beckler and then handcuffed him and secured him in the boat until they could reach shore.

Once there Beckler was taken into custody and transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking. According to county online court records, Beckler has been charged with receiving stolen goods less than $2,000, resisting arrest and possession of methamphetamine or cocaine based drugs. He remains in custody on a total of $11,000 in bonds.

Beckler was already out on bond from a previous arrest in April for criminal domestic violence with a pending court date. A search of county records shows nearly a dozen criminal charges filed against Beckler dating back to 2000.
