  Fire turns up the heat on firefighters web posted August 23, 2007  MERRIWETHER – As
temperatures topped 100
degrees Wednesday afternoon a man decided to burn some debris behind
his house on the 2300 block of Martintown Road. He burnt the debris,
and a little over two acres of adjacent pasture and forest bringing the
Merriwether Fire Department to the area to fight the growing fire.Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about half an hour and continued to extinguish stumps, downed trees, and other hot spots that remained. The Forestry Service was also called to the scene to dig a firebreak around the scorched area. Firefighters were able to leave the area mid afternoon. With the 16 of the past 19 days seeing temperatures over 100, and little or no appreciable rain, outdoor burning is not advised until conditions improve.  For
