Burglar hits Sportsman's Corner at 2 am Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 24, 2005 MERRIWETHER – An early morning burglary was reported to the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department around 2 am Tuesday. Investigator Phil Ireland said the burglar took a hammer and broke the glass in the front door to gain access to Sportsman’s Corner convenience store. “He walked in and laid the hammer on the counter,” as the burglar made his way around the counter to heist cigarettes, Investigator Ireland said adding that he picked it back up as he left, “so he was thinking.” The burglar made off with nine cartons of Marlboro cigarettes but dropped three cartons in the parking lot. Investigator Ireland said the man wore a brown mask and blue gloves to try to conceal his identity. It is believed the suspect or suspects drove into the parking lot earlier and then parked off the side of Briggs Road. The silver color car (perhaps a Toyota) had been customized and had a sunroof and a gold gas cap. Greenwood Sheriff’s Deputies have contacted the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department about an armed robbery in which they believed the suspects were from Edgefield County. It is possible, Investigator Ireland said, that the two cases may be connected. Investigator Randy Doran was handling the investigation in connection with the Greenwood robbery to see if they are related. Investigator Ireland said he did not believe the burglar was a regular customer because he did not seem to know his way around the store very well and that it appeared to be a crime of opportunity. Surveillance cameras in and outside of the store recorded the entire event. Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department at 803-637-5337 or 803-278-1625. Callers may remain anonymous. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
