Couple reports rattlesnake in neighbor’s home

web posted August 27, 2007
MERRIWETHER – About 4:30 Saturday afternoon a Merriwether woman called 911 to report a snake inside her neighbor’s home. The neighbors were out of town and she was caring for the family cat when she discovered the snake in the living room. “It’s about two feet long”, she said, with markings on its back and what looked to be a “rattle” at the end of the tail.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene but they radioed that they had no way of removing the snake and suggested calling an exterminator. A nearby responder heard the call and notified dispatch that he would go capture the snake and remove it from the home.

Upon arrival he was met by two people standing outside in the yard, both visibly shaken. The two showed the responder through the glass of the front door the location of the snake, a short section of the tail could be seen sticking out from under a table.

Once inside the responder shinned a flashlight on the snake, smiled, and then reached down and picked it up. It was a wooden toy snake.

The man and woman reporting the snake said they had no idea how the toy came to be in the house since they were the only ones with a key. The responder told them that more than likely someone was just playing a joke on them and left the snake on the floor in the room.
