Woodlawn Road sight of more arrests on busy Saturday night
Man reaches for gun at scene

web posted August 29, 2005

MERRIWETHER – Woodlawn Road saw its fair share of crime Saturday night as calls continued to come in to the E-911 operators.  Around 11:20 pm a report of an erratic driver in a red truck with a camper shell was spotted traveling west on Martintown Road. Later Deputies were called to Woodlawn Road for a red truck parked in the middle of the road.

Edgefield Daily.com arrived at the scene to find Deputy Robert Velasco with a white male and female at the front of his car and a red truck parked partially off the road. The truck appeared to have hit a sign with marks on the hood and a broken windshield. In addition the driver’s side door was recently dented. The two individuals could safely be described as very intoxicated.

The woman was giving the deputy continous trouble as well as telling our photographer and Deputy Velasco she wanted to “kick his ass”.

The man tried to retrieve a backpack from the edge of the road when he spilled the contents. As he tried to grab the contents a gun was spotted and he was taken into custody. Deputy Curtis Morris arrived about that time.

After a search of the vehicle, drugs were discovered in the truck and were taken into custody as evidence.

When the woman was placed under arrest she resisted the officers and both Deputy Velasco and Sgt. Morris had to force her hands behind her back. She then began complaining of injuries to her leg (which was never touched) and continued to scream from the back of the patrol car as officers continued to gather evidence.

The man remained cooperative and gave officers no trouble other than reaching for a gun. (see Editor's note below) The woman made several statements and claims and was taken to the Edgefield County Hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Detention Center.

The son-in-law arrived at the scene to retrieve the vehicle and moved it from the roadway once the scene was cleared. The red F150 had to be jump-started by a patrol car in order to be moved.

Traffic was blocked on Woodlawn Road for approximately an hour before being restored.

Charged in the incident were Richard James Corley, 53 of the 1300 block of Atomic Road, North Augusta, for simple possession of marijuana and Debra Ann Corley, 45, of the same address, for disorderly conduct.

A man arrived on the scene to say he was traveling down Woodlawn Road when he witnessed the man standing in the middle of the road with a beer in hand urinating with the lights of the truck off while parked in the middle of the road. As he passed the man in custody in the patrol car he said, “Yeah, that’s him”. His information and statement was taken by Deputies.

Editor's Note: Edgefield Daily.com's reporter watched as the man reached several times
unsuccessfully for the gun, which looked to be in small caliber and in a holster,  before he was removed from the area. Deputy Velasco retrieved the gun without incident.

Edgefield Daily.com would like to note the quick actions of Deputy
Velasco single-handedly controlling a difficult situation which could have been more volatile if not for his ability to diffuse the situation.

We also would note the woman on the scene would reach repeatedly at the empty holster on the hood of the patrol car which held the gun in custody before being placed under arrest.
