Car shot up on Woodlawn Road as rash of
crimes continues throughout the night Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 29, 2005 Below: Deputy Jimmy Smith examines the vehicle Edgefield Daily.com Photo MERRIWETHER – Saturday night brought about a flurry of activity for the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department in Merriwether. With the recent rash of burglaries at Sportsman’s Corner Sheriff’s Deputies were in the area and one was stationed at Sportsman’s Corner to make the clerks feel safe. Around 9:40 pm a call came in of a vehicle that had been vandalized on Woodlawn Road. Sheriff’s Deputy Jimmy Smith arrived to find that the car had been shot up just inside the county line. Sgt. Donald Morris arrived on the scene and began collecting evidence and photographs. The car had been shot at least ten times with birdshot and slugs, mostly from the passenger side and a couple to the front. The driver’s side window was also shot out but it appeared that happened during a shot from the passenger side window. The owner of the car, who did not want to be identified, stated he had a flat tire around 7:00 pm and left the car until he could return with a spare. When he returned around 9:30 pm he found the car "shot up". Below:Sgt. Robert Velasco escorting an individual into another Deputy’s car. As it turned out the man had outstanding felony warrants and had walked from Augusta Ga. to the store after riding a bus from Canada. He was transported to Greenwood by Edgefield County Deputies. Merriwether, an ordinarily very quiet area, seems to be in the midst of a spree of unrelated crimes.
