Merriwether Community-wide Food Drive Kicks Off This Week
web posted August 30, 2010
MERRIWETHER – Merriwether County Councilwoman Genia
Blackwell has announced a community-wide food drive for the Merriwether
District that will kick off on Wednesday,
September 1 and run through
September 20. “I thought this would be a wonderful way to draw our
community closer together for a good cause,” Councilwoman Blackwell
said. “The support from our local churches, schools, community leaders,
and firefighters has been tremendous as the planning got underway.”
The canned and non perishable food will be donated to the Golden
Harvest Food Bank which services Edgefield County and other surrounding
areas. “Everyone with Golden Harvest has been a delight
to work with,” Blackwell said. They are providing the collection bins
and some of the flyers. Baby food and formula cannot be accepted.
There will be several drop-off locations available including the
Merriwether Fire Stations on Martintown and Murrah Roads, Merriwether
Elementary and Middle Schools, Big Stevens Creek Baptist Church,
Fishcamp Church,
Sweetwater Baptist Church, and additional locations may be added in the
coming days.
"This
would not be possible
without the help of some very special people," Councilwoman Blackwell
said. "Dr. Paul Noe (Sweetwater Baptist), Pastor Tommy Meador (Big
Stevens
Creek Baptist), Tom Plowden (Fishcamp Church), Joey Smith (Merriwether
Fire Chief), Principals Bobby Tuner (MMS) and Mr. Merchant (MES), and
support from the Edgefield County School District; namely
Superintendent Dr. Mary Crenshaw and Information Officer Sandra Friar."
Mrs. Blackwell said that calls to other area churches and schools have
also been made in an effort to bring them onboard.
“Having been born and raised in Merriwether I know what
a special, giving and caring area our community is. This is an exciting
opportunity to draw the community closer together and show the strength
and support that Merriwether has to offer. I, along with everyone
involved, look forward to this drive being a huge success,” Blackwell
said.
“One of my favorite quotes has always been by Winston Churchill”, Mrs.
Blackwell added, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life
by
what we give."
