Early morning crash sends one man to MCG

web posted August 31, 2006

MERRIWETHER – A little after 5 am Thursday Edgefield County Deputies, EMS, and Merriwether Fire Department personnel were called to the site of a single car crash on Sweetwater Road. The crash, which occurred less than a mile away from Station 2 of the Merriwether Fire Department at Moore Road left one man injured and trapped inside of his Jeep Grand Cherokee that overturned after striking several trees before coming to rest down a steep embankment.

EMS workers were able to immobilize the man and extract him from the rear of vehicle as rescuers stood ready with a basket tied with rope to pull the man up the steep hill.

Once the man was brought to the top of the hill, he was quickly loaded into a waiting ambulance and rushed to MCG Trauma Center in Augusta. His condition was not available.

The SUV the man was driving was heading north on Sweetwater Road when it left the northbound lane and began to slide. With the early morning dew, the driver ventured further off the road in a sharp curve before striking a tree and then began to roll. The Jeep then continued down the hillside striking at least two other large trees before coming to rest on yet another tree, upside down.

The crash blocked traffic on Sweetwater Road for about an hour.
