Thefts from vehicles continue to grow in number
web posted September 2, 2010
MERRIWETHER – Thefts from unlocked cars and trucks
in the yards of Merriwether residents
continue, even if at a lower pace
than in previous months. In the past week a total of $815 in
electronics and cash have been stolen from cars parked at area homes.
In the past five weeks nearly three dozen vehicles have been targeted
and nearly $10,000 in property stolen.
An arrest in a single case has been made, but the thefts continue
undaunted. A report on Wednesday morning around 1 am came from a
witness who alerted his neighbor that a man was seen entering his truck
before fleeing the scene, perhaps knowing his activity was being
observed.
The Hickory Drive man alerted his neighbor about the crime, but before
Sheriff’s Deputies could arrive moments later, the man was gone. He was
described as a white male possibly in this late 20’s to 30’s wearing
dark shorts and a white t-shirt. The man fled on foot towards
Sweetwater Road.
Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
Late last week a Coranet Drive resident reported a cell phone, CD’s and
cash totaling $615 in value was stolen from a vehicle parked at the
family home.
A day before a similar report was filed reporting a GPS unit stolen
from a vehicle parked at a Summerlake Drive home at a value of $200.
Residents are again encouraged to remove valuables from their vehicles
at night and to lock all doors and activate alarm systems is available
on their vehicles.
According to incident reports, the majority of thefts seem to be taking
place between 11 pm and 6 am.
