Firefighters hold "Fill the Boot" drive to benefit MDA

web posted September 3, 2007
MERRIWETHER – While most people were heading off to the lake or the beach for the last long weekend of the summer, area firefighters were out giving of their time to collect money for the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. The Merriwether Volunteer Fire Department held their “Fill the Boot” drive on Saturday morning. Drives were held on Sweetwater Road at Five Notch Road, the intersection of Martintown and Gregory Lake Roads, and Highway 25 at Kennedy Drive.

Merriwether Fire Chief Faye Fuller said their department raised $2,300 - which is about average for the drive. The MVFD has been conducting the Fill the Boot drives for at least seven years.

Some of the firefighters said that after conducting the drives over the years they have learned some of the types of people that are willing to give. “If the car or truck has a dog in it,” one fireman said, “they’re going to give.” Most donations are only a few dollars or spare change, but some are very generous giving five, ten, and twenty dollars.
