Merriwether continues to be targeted for thefts from vehicles

web posted September 3, 2010

MERRIWETHER – Two more thefts from vehicles in the Merriwether were reported on Wednesday morning totaling over $2,000 in stolen property. Once again, the vehicles targeted were left unlocked with valuables inside. The Sheriff’s Office has repeatedly requested that residents remove valuables from your vehicles at night and to lock the doors as the number of thefts continues to rise recently. The total value of property stolen since mid-July has now risen to over $12,000.

The first report came just after 6 am Wednesday when a Morris Run man found a Bowtech bow, his wallet, and a “medical bag” was removed from his Toyota Tacoma pickup during the night. The theft reportedly took place between 9 pm Tuesday and 6 am Wednesday.

The total value of the property was estimated at $2,120.

Also on Wednesday morning a Stephens Road woman reported finding her car had been ransacked with items removed from her glove box and console. The only thing reported missing was approximately $20 in cash.

According to incident reports, the thefts continue to occur between 11 pm and 6 am.

Residents are encouraged to activate security systems on vehicles before parking them for the night. The person or persons responsible for the recent thefts are not breaking into the vehicles and are instead targeting those left unsecured.

Report any suspicious activity in your area and be observant of your neighbor’s property. As Edgefield Daily reported, a Hickory Drive neighbor alerted a homeowner of someone enter their vehicle around 1 am last week.

The suspect, reportedly a white male possibly in this late 20’s to 30’s wearing dark shorts and a white t-shirt, fled on foot towards Sweetwater Road. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
