Celebrating 10 Years - Merriwether Chess Club Starts September 10
web posted September 6, 2012
MERRIWETHER – They’ve come to be known as
the “Mavericks”, a shared equestrian themed moniker, for the chess club
that is shared by the elementary and middle school. The club will have
its first meeting from 5 until 6 PM on September 10th, 2012 at the
elementary school cafeteria. “We can comfortably accommodate
around 20 players. Any elementary or middle school student who wants to
learn about chess will enjoy the club experience”, says seventh year
coach David Whatley.
“If the student wants to become involved in tournament play, we have an
avenue for that as well”, he added. Mr. Whatley also serves as the S.C.
Chess Association’s state scholastic coordinator.
The clubs goal is to provide a fun and entertaining introduction to
chess, and along the way, reap the benefits of improved logic and
critical-thinking skills that is brought about by study of the
game.
The first meeting will be an overview of the club and it’s curriculum.
Additionally, some fun facts about the game, and the people who have
played it will be shared. Parents and students will also be given the
opportunity to ask questions in the first informal setting.
The cost of membership is $35 for the year. This covers basic
instruction, a regulation chess set, and one club T-shirt (or popular
chess book for prior students).
For more information you can send an email to Mr. Whatley at
whatleydavid@bellsouth.net, or visit their Facebook page at Merriwether
Mavericks Scholastic Chess Club to see more about the program.
Mr. Whatley can also be reached at his home phone, 803-442-9060.
