Catalytic Converters Targeted in Recent Merriwether Thefts

web posted September 13, 2012

MERRIWETHER – Theft of catalytic converters off vehicles in the Merriwether area have increased recently and a witness called to report following two white males driving a white SUV were driving in and out of driveways in the surrounding neighborhoods around Stephens Road Tuesday afternoon. As deputies were responding the witness saw the two men drive up to a Running Creek home and go underneath a vehicle that was later found to have the converter removed.

He followed the two men until he lost them on Highway 25. Deputies converged on the area to try to locate the two men and met with the witness. The witness was able to provide descriptions of the two men and a partial tag number. A complete tag number was not able to be seen because the tag was "folded" to conceal the rest of the tag.

As the investigation continued, a suspect was developed and a tag registered to the vehicle matched to partial plate provided by the witness.

The witness stated he could identify the vehicle and the two suspects if he saw them again. According to an incident report released on Wednesday, photo line-ups of possible suspects were being prepared by SLED to be shown to the witness in hopes to identify them.

The same vehicle has been spotted in another recent theft of two converters on Currytown Road earlier this week.

The case remains under investigation.
