Two walk away from near head-on collision

MERRIWETHER – An early morning collision on Sweetwater Road tied up traffic for well over an hour and a half Friday morning. The drivers of both vehicles involved in a near head-on collision walked away with minor injuries. The call was received at 9-1-1 dispatch at 7:14 am.

A man was driving his white GMC 3500 duel wheel truck south on Sweetwater Road and missed his turn and was going to turn around at Murrah Road Extension when a Fox Creek High student driving a black Sentra was heading north on Sweetwater and crossed the center line by several feet one witness said. The two just missed hitting head on and the side and rear of the pick-up basically ran over the Sentra.

The young lady driving the Sentra suffered a few cuts from the glass and had bruising from the airbags and seatbelt. The driver of the truck said he too was wearing his seatbelt due to the fact his son was killed in a traffic accident in February of this year. The man was uninjured.

Edgefield County Deputies directed traffic on the busy road until South Carolina Highway Patrol could arrive on the scene. The young lady’s mother said she was glad her daughter had her seatbelt on, “I just thank God she had it on,” she said. Neither driver said the other was going very fast at the time. “I’m just glad everyone is OK,” the driver of the truck said.
