Thieves Net Nearly $60K in Merriwether Burglary
web posted September 18, 2012
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether man returning
to his home on the 2200 block of Martintown Road led to the discovery
of a burglary that saw an estimated $58,995 in guns, bedding and old
silver coins dating back to the 18th century taken during the crime.
The man had been away for two days and it is unclear on which day the
burglary took place.
After an Edgefield County Deputy arrived on the scene and discovered
the scope of the property stolen, investigators were called to process
the scene and take over the investigation.
According to an incident report released on Monday, a total of thirteen
guns - ranging from pistols, rifles, and shotguns - were taken at a
values estimated to be $8,900. The homeowner was able to provide
investigators with the make, model, caliber, and serial numbers for the
stolen guns. They were placed on NCIC, a national database of stolen
property and wanted individuals, a short time later in an effort to
prevent the sale of the weapons.
An extensive coin collection of silver coins dating back as far at the
1700's were in a lockbox that was also stolen. They were valued at a
minimum of $50,000. There were no specifics given on the old and rare
coins at this time.
A jar of pennies, estimated to be about $20 worth, was taken as well a
$75 bed comforter. It is expected the weapons were placed on the
comforter and then rolled up to make transporting them out of the house
easier.
Damage to a back door that was the forced point of entry was estimated
at around $200.
Investigators said on Monday they are working to trying to develop
leads in the case. A list of the stolen weapons can be found below with
serial numbers.
Anyone purchasing and/or being offered the guns for purchase should
contact the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office at once at 803-637-5337
