North Augusta man becomes fifth fatality on county roads

web posted September 19, 2007
MERRIWETHER – A North Augusta man became the fifth fatality on Edgefield County roads this year after losing control of his Nissan Titan pick up truck on Stephens Road just after midnight Tuesday. Edgefield County Deputies, EMS, Merriwether Fire Department, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol were summoned to the scene.

The man was heading east on Stephens Road from Sweetwater Road when he lost control of the truck on the very curvy road. As he tried to negotiate a series of curves near Shortcut Road he left the roadway and began skidding into the next curve. The truck then left the right-hand side of the road and struck an embankment and rolled once, partially ejecting the man from the truck.

When rescuers arrived the man was found pinned under the side of the truck from the driver’s side window. Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett pronounced the man dead on the scene and said the identity of the man is not being released pending notification of family members.

All traffic on Stephens Road was shut down until the scene could be cleared.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and said speed was considered a factor. The man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and many on the scene believed he would have "walked away" from the crash with minor injuries if he was restrained.

Stephens Road has been the scene of several crashes due to the numerous sharp curves contained on the narrow “cut-through” road between Sweetwater Road and Highway 25 and was just yards away from the proposed location of the Fox Creek Charter High School.
