Reports of "shots fired" results in one charged

web posted September 22, 2006

MERRIWETHER – A report of shots fired from a pick up truck in a subdivision off Currytown Road brought Edgefield County Deputies swarming to the area to locate a red truck with at least two teens in the back of the truck and a third driving. With almost a half a dozen calls from residents reporting the incident, one took it upon themselves to follow the truck giving police updates on the direction of travel until deputies could arrive.

The truck turned onto Martintown Road heading east and then onto Springhaven Drive before turning towards Five Notch Road and then turning back towards Mealing Road. Deputies began to cordon off the escape routes as they began entering from three different directions in an effort to apprehend the subjects.

The local resident then followed the truck until it entered Currytown Station where he stopped at the entrance until deputies arrived. Two deputies began searching the neighborhood for the truck but were unable to locate the subjects as a third blocked the exit from the neighborhood. A checkpoint was set up at the entrance of the subdivision just after midnight.

After about thirty minutes the red truck drove up to the awaiting deputies and the driver was ordered out of the truck, the two other subjects that were in the back of the truck were not with him.

As deputies began questioning the young man he admitted to throwing fireworks out of the window of the truck but refused to give the identity of his cohorts. Deputies did recover fireworks from the truck and did not find any weapons inside the vehicle.

The teen was charged in the incident for violation of a noise ordinance and warned of the implications that could have resulted from his actions. He has a court date set for October 4, 2006. Additional charges could be pending against the teen. His identity was not provided at the scene.

A second vehicle approached the checkpoint and turned around before speeding away. A pursuing deputy was unable to locate the car and its occupants. It is believed the car contained the two other teens that were in the red truck during the commission of the crime. It is believed they returned to a home familiar to the three in the subdivision.

EdgefieldDaily.com arrived on the scene as the reporting resident was giving deputies details of the actions of the truck’s driver to the officers. He stated he “backed off” from following too close in fear that the driver might injure the two teens in the back of the truck due to the excessive speeds the driver was traveling on the curvy roads.

Deputies cleared the scene just before 2 am. The two other teens were never located in the search. Deputies thanked the resident for his assistance in the apprehension of the driver. The teen was issued a summons and released on the scene.
