Discovery of shoe leads family to hope in finding Marion Key

Below: The exact clothes Mr. Key had on
when he went missing
MERRIWETHER – Family members of Marion Key, who has been missing since July 12, 2005, reported finding a shoe they hope might be a clue in the disappearance of Mr. Key. While distributing flyers to popular local gathering places of hunters family members spotted a black shoe on the side of the road about two miles past Sportsman’s Corner. It turned out to be a black Dr. Shoals shoe with two Velcro straps, the same kind Mr. Marion Key was wearing when he went missing.

Mr. Key's car was found September 2nd on a logging road on private property.

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department retrieved the shoe and has taken it to be processed. They will be returning to the site today for a more in-depth search of the area including the use of a cadaver dog sources stated. Initial reports are the shoe was a size 11. Family members stated that Mr. Key generally wore between a 9 ½ to a 10 ½ but would buy a size 11 in order to get the width he needed in shoes.

Bonnie Posey, one of Mr. Key’s daughters, said her daughter was with her sister when the two spotted the shoe, “They passed it after they dropped off some flyers at Sportsman’s (Corner) and didn’t think much about it but stopped and checked on it when they were coming home.” Mrs. Posey said “Jessica called me when they found it; she was crying and didn’t know what to do.” The family notified the Sheriff’s Department who responded to the scene around 4: 30 pm Mrs. Posey said.

“Mama doesn’t think it’s his shoe,” Mrs. Posey said, “but it’s the same kind of shoe with the same two Velcro straps.” Regardless of the recent discovery of a shoe and his car, the family is placing flyers asking hunters to please be on the lookout for anything that may lead to the location of Mr. Key, “you never know when some little something, like the shoe, anything, will lead us to find him.”
Edgefield Daily.com will be meeting with Investigators today and will have updates as more information becomes available.

The flyer asks hunters to report anything resembling the following description. Marion Key was 5’ 9” and approximately 250 pounds with gray hair and was wearing a:
Blue and white plaid shirt
Navy blue Dickie pants
Brown belt
Red Medic Alert bracelet
Black “diabetic shoes” with two velcro straps
Diabetic insoles
Wallet
Checkbook
Keys
Driver’s license

Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield County Sheriff's Department at 803-637-5337 or 803-278-1625

The photo presented is Mr. Keys wearing the exact same clothes he had on when he disappeared.
