Fire destroys Merriwether home

web posted September 28, 2007
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether family is without a home after an early afternoon fire swept through their ranch style home on Forrest Drive leaving it completely gutted and all contents of the home in ashes. The fire was reported after one of the owners arrived to take a shower around 3 pm and saw flames coming from the rear of the home. He was able to make entry into the burning home and save the family dog.

The Merriwether Fire Department arrived at the home, located at 35 Forrest Drive, minutes later and began battling the rapidly spreading fire and were joined by the Westside, County Line, and Belvedere Fire Departments a short time later. Merriwether Fire Chief Faye Fulmer said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen area and spread fast, eventually engulfing the entire home.

Firefighters were able to battle the fire in the attic area from a ladder and save a large portion of the roof as others entered the home to battle the flames as it spread throughout the home and saved a large portion of the exterior walls. However, all the contents of the home were lost to the fire and most of the interior walls were destroyed. The home was considered a “complete loss”.

Firefighters remained on the scene watering down hot spots for over two hours.

If any relief effort is announced for contributions for the family, EdgefieldDaily.com will publish the information when it is available. The local Red Cross has been notified and is responding to help the displaced family.
