Free Puppy Ad Leads to Report of Scam
web posted October 1, 2012
MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether woman reported
a possible scam after placing an ad in an area daily newspaper for free
puppies. She was contacted by an unknown man asking if she still had
the puppies and asked for a photo of them and she complied. The
following exchanges between her and the man tipped her that she was
being scammed.
After sending the pictures of the puppies she received an email from
the man saying he wanted to "buy one of the puppies" and would send a
check. And then came the "but" clause.
"He needed her to cash the check, take out the cost of the puppies, and
send the rest back to the Head Office of the company that would handle
the pick up via Money Gram," an incident report stated.
The email also stated the woman would need to provide her full name,
address, cell phone and home phone numbers as well. That is when she
called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office to report the scam.
The incident report did not provide an actual name of the man other
than a name in the Yahoo email address he used.
Anyone offering to send you a check and asking you to cash it, take a
portion, and then mail the rest back to them is almost always scamming
you. After you have sent the money, the check comes back as fake and
you owe the bank for the money you sent the scammer.
You should always report such offers to the Edgefield County Sheriff's
Office at 803-637-5337 or your local law enforcement agency and keep
all copies of phone calls, texts, letters or emails relating to the
incident.
