Second Merriwether Home Targeted for Gun Thefts
web posted October 2, 2012
MERRIWETHER – A second burglary of
Merriwether homes has again seen a large number of weapons stolen in
the past two weeks, this time topping over $20,000 in value. A Dupriest
Circle man called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office after
discovering that an estimated $22,000 in vintage guns were discovered
stolen from his home on Friday after he returned.
According to an incident report, the man's daughter had reported
finding his garage door open a few weeks ago while he was out of town.
He did not discover the theft until returning. Among the stolen guns
were an 1873 Winchester, and 1894 Winchester, a Remington 30.06
semi-automatic rifle, a Marlin 30.30 lever action and a Lafiver 12
gauge double barrel shotgun.
A tent that was in the garage, valued at $150, was also found missing.
No serial numbers were available for the guns at the time of the
report, but will be turned over to investigators for further
investigation.
Two weeks ago a Martintown Road home was targeted for a burglary that
saw 13 guns stolen, as reported
here with serial numbers.
In that burglary a total of nearly $60,000 in weapons and silver coins
stolen. One arrest has already been made in that case. Gene Donald
Cook, Jr., 47, has been charged in connection to the Martintown Road
burglary. More arrests are expected.
