Merriwether Fire Department holds annual meeting

MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether Volunteer Fire Department held its annual meeting Monday night at the main Fire Station on Martintown Road. Firefighters were treated to a bar-b-que dinner before the meeting got underway.

Chief Fire Commissioner Paul Bunch called the meeting to order and stated the first order of business was to hold election for Fire Commissioners as Ray Johnson’s term was up. With no other nominations being made for the position Ray Johnson was re-elected for another term. Other Commissioners are Paul Bunch, Frank Maurer, D. Swint, and Curt Barnes. Mr. Bunch told the department the MVFD had spent roughly $30,000 on a new brush truck and $215,000 on new equipment. The department was also waiting on a new service truck which costs $150,000.

Fire Chief Faye Fulmer took the podium to run down the calls the department has responded to over the year, which runs from November to November, “We responded to 63 fires, 5 false alarms, 6 first responder calls, 18 mutual aid calls, and 11 other,” she said. Of the fires twenty-two were structure fires, thirteen vehicle fires, thirty-one brush fires, and six arsons.

Chief Fulmer also reminded the firefighters that the MVFD would be assisting with the Carnival at Merriwether Elementary School on Saturday October 15, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm with the Smokehouse and bringing one of the fire trucks to the school for the children to examine.

The Merriwether Fire Department will also be holding an Open House for the public on Saturday October 22, from 9:00 am till 12:00 PM at the Martintown Road Station with some refreshments provided.

The department said they are actively seeking new volunteers and those wishing to join the fire department may sign up at any of the training meetings held every Tuesday night at the Martintown Road Fire Station.
