Merriwether Fire Department holds Open House

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted October 24, 2005

MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether Volunteer Fire Department held an Open House on Saturday with Fire Prevention tips and demonstrations with fire extinguishers. On display was the Departments assorted Fire Trucks and Service Vehicles. Local children were enjoying the trucks as well as the brownies, candy, sandwiches, and drinks provided.

Many of the children enjoyed sitting in the drivers seat of the Fire Trucks and blowing the air horn and all beamed when the sirens wailed. Merriwether resident Jim Jackson brought his son Matthew to the Open House to enjoy the festivities.

The community was given the opportunity to have a first hand look at Fire Trucks, Ambulances, Rescue Equipment, and learn about Fire Safety. Among the equipment spotlighted were the Hurst Tools used to extract trapped patients. Edgefield County is among the few counties who are fortunate enough to have this equipment on every ambulance.

The Merriwether Fire Department has responded to 63 fires, 5 false alarms, 6 first responder calls, 18 mutual aid calls, and 11 others calls. Of the fires twenty-two were structure fires, thirteen vehicle fires, thirty-one brush fires, and six were arsons.
