EDGEFIELD – Local Cub Scouts went the extra mile to find a family directly affected by Hurricane Katrina to present them with funds they raised from collections and chores performed. Cub Scout Pack 601 presented Bill and Lindsey Durden with a total of $188.00. “We wanted to let the children actually meet the people they were helping rather than just give it to the Red Cross or another group,” Den Leader Debbie Reville said.

"This is a great first step in The Purposes of Cub Scouting. Just a few that I see we will have achieved are Spiritual Growth, Character Development, and Good Citizenship," Mrs. Reville said. The Cub Scouts lined up to individually present the Durden’s with money they had earned to help the family re-establish themselves.

Pastor Lanny Miller and the Antioch Baptist Church is providing free housing for the Durden Family. Bill Durden, a tug boat crewman by trade, said their home was “completely wiped out” in the storm. They have been back home a few times to collect what they could and have decided to remain in Edgefield County he said adding, “We’re going to stay here. This is where we need to be.”

Mr. Durden said other family members were returning to New Orleans.

Unable to participate in the presentation was Cub Scout Gage Keiningham who is not pictured but participated in collecting money.
