Crash
halts traffic on Highway 25 during morning rush hour
web
posted October 25, 2007
MERRIWETHER – An early morning crash
halted traffic on Highway 25 near Short Cut Road Wednesday morning just
before 8 am. A man driving northbound on Highway 25 lost control of his
Ford Crown Victoria when it left the right hand side of the highway
striking a power pole and landing the car on its side. The power pole
snapped near the top and the power lines and a transformer hung
perilously over the crash site.
Merriwether and County Line Firefighters arrived on the scene and after
securing the overturned car with a cable connected to one of the fire
trucks began chipping away at the edge of the windshield in an effort
to remove it to free the driver trapped inside.
As rescuers worked
to free the man from the car, deputies halted all
traffic on the highway as the broken power pole left the power lines
crossing the road hanging low and feared the possibility the lines
could fall.
Southbound traffic was diverted down Short Cut Road and northbound
traffic remained snarled for almost an hour as rescuers and EMS removed
the driver and immobilized him for transport to MCG for treatment of
injuries, which were not considered serious.
The scene was cleared in about an hour after power crews arrived and
began repairing the damaged pole and lines.
