Thieves Target Merriwether Home

web posted October 30, 2012

MERRIWETHER – A Cheves Creek woman arrived at the family home around 10:30 Sunday morning to find the front door of the home kicked in and called 911 to report the burglary. An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy arrived minutes later and cleared the home finding no one inside. After items were determined stolen an investigator was called to process the scene for evidence.

The woman reported a jewelry box containing an estimated $1,800 worth of jewelry was missing. Among the jewelry stolen was a 1982 Midland Valley High School class ring, a yellow gold "nugget" pinky ring, a diamond shaped Sapphire set in yellow gold, a man's yellow gold wedding ring size 10, an oval shaped Turquoise ring set in sliver with a "spoon shape" on either side of the setting and a pair of yellow gold "sand dollar" earrings.

The woman told deputies that she left the home around 1 pm on Saturday and returned around 10:30 Sunday morning to discover the burglary. Also uncovered during the initial investigation was that her alarm went off around 5:30 Saturday afternoon, but it does not contact 911. A neighbor did check the house but did not see anything noteworthy.

The burglar or burglars tried to pry open a side door but was unable to gain entry and moved to the front door and was able to kick the door in to make entry. Investigators were able to recover a footprint from the front door as evidence. Damage to the two doors was estimated at $1,300.

A neighbor also reported hearing a vehicle leave from the scene at a high rate of speed, but could not provide a description or time.

The case has been turned over to the Criminal Investigative Division.
