Man Spotted Setting Brush Fires

web posted November 3, 2012

MERRIWETHER – A Columbia County man contacted the Edgefield County 911 Center Friday afternoon to report a brush fire in Edgefield County. He was on the other side of the waterway but could see a man and a white truck. The caller said the man was starting multiple brush fires under the power lines near a gravel road.

Merriwether Firefighters and Sheriff's Deputies located the fires off Chota Road around 4:20 pm. Other deputies patrolled Thurmond Road and Woodlawn Road in hopes of catching the suspected arsonist.

Firefighters extinguished at least three separate fires them man is said to have started.

A witness stated they saw a man driving a white Ford F150 truck leaving the area on Thurmond Road turning towards Martintown Road just before firefighters arrived on the scene. The truck was said to have a red Georgia Bulldog sticker on the bumper, but the witness did not get a tag number.

Deputies patrolled Martintown Road and notified North Augusta Police to be on the lookout for the truck, which was never located.
