Driver to face charges after short chase and crash

web posted November 22, 2006

MERRIWETHER – A clerk at Sportsman’s Corner, a popular Merriwether store, reported a customer harassing her and customers to the Sheriff’s Office Tuesday night around 7 pm. Just before deputies arrived on the scene the man attempted to leave the store and struck a light pole knocking out one of his headlights. The man then reportedly drove across the street and into a ditch where he remained stuck for a few minutes giving police time to arrive in the area. The man was able to free the Ford Bronco just before deputies arrived and proceeded down Woodlawn Road.

After crossing Big Stevens Creek Bridge one deputy initiated a traffic stop when the man turned off on a dirt driveway and tried to escape. The one lane road, made slippery by Tuesday’s rains, was a bit more than the driver could handle and he proceeded to crash into a large Elm tree and fence line, disabling his truck and ending the short chase.

Upon exiting the Bronco the man fell into the barbed wire fence along the side of the driveway. One deputy stated the man was so intoxicated he was unable to stand.

After being taken into custody the man made repeated attempts to kick out the window of the patrol car he was placed in after the crash. Once the tow truck driver arrived to tow the truck from the private road, the man was transported to the Edgefield County Hospital to be treated for any injuries received in the incident.

The man had not been booked into the Detention Center by 11:30 pm so his identity is being withheld until formal charges are filed. The man could be facing assorted charges including trespassing due to the private drive being posted.
