  Merriwether firefighters called to early morning fire web posted November 27, 2007  MERRIWETHER – The
Merriwether Fire
Department was called to a home on the 1000 block of Cannon Mill Drive
just after 5 am Tuesday with a report of a structure fire. When the
first firefighters arrived on the scene the family was outside of the
home and the father was using a water hose to stop the fire underneath
the home from spreading.Though no flames were visible the crawlspace was consumed with smoke. The fire was extinguished quickly and firefighters continued to search the underside and inside of the home to assure it had not spread beyond the area around the fireplace. With the use of heavy-duty fans the smoke was cleared from the home and the family was assured the home was safe to reenter. Fire crews cleared the scene shortly after 6 am. The home suffered minor damage. With colder weather approaching and the increased use of fireplaces and heaters everyone is reminded to check the batteries in smoke detectors. Early detection of a fire saves lives. ©
